RTH Daily Chart

Retailers, who’ve been doing so well recently, may have lost a bit today, but still aren’t looking too bad.  Up against the resistance though, it doesn’t look like RTH will break out any time soon.  I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ll mention it again.  Don’t buy RTH itself, just use it to gauge the retail market.  Along with today’s sharp drop across the broader market, look for some of the retailers that have gotten overbought to correct back a little.

It’s not really a specific stock, but Retail Holders is just a simple ETF with some major retailers including AMZN, BBY, COST, HD, TGT, and WMT.  I’ve been talking about retailers on this blog quite a bit over the past few months, but I don’t think I mentioned that this is one way I keep track of them.  Look at this as somewhat of a gauge depicting consumer confidence (or lack of confidence now).  I wouldn’t actually trade this, but at least it’ll give you another indicator of when to short your favorite retailer.  2008 has been hard for them so far after all of the weak holiday sales, but it’s been that way across the board in the market.  It looks oversold right now, but I would only use a correction to establish more short positions since any upwards move will probably be short lived.  Hope that answers your question.
